We welcome you to 12 days of music workshops, rehearsals, cultural exchange and concerts in the Nyanza region. Ethno Kenya is built on community spirit, diversity, sharing of knowledge and experiences, and promotes the core values of openness, generosity and respect. By the end of the camp you’ll feel like you never want to go home! Don’t hesitate to apply!

An exchange for life:

Ethno Kenya is about sharing the love of traditional music and exploring our roots in a unique intercultural learning space. It offers an opportunity to learn from incredible musicians through oral tradition and exchange.

During the camp you will get a chance to share music from your own community/culture to the other participants. You will learn music from all the other participating musician’s communities and countries. After all songs are arranged, we will go on tours to play concerts in venues in the Nyanza region.

Artistic Mentors: We will have two amazing artistic mentors. Amalie Malmgren Asmild and Nathan Okite will facilitate the process and help each musician bring out the best of their skills. Keep an eye on our social media to get to know more about them.

Food: Food will be prepared by our local cooking team. You will enjoy the diverse flavors of Kenyan food and cuisine. You will get 3 meals a day (we also cater for special dietary needs), non-alcoholic drinks included. All participants will have a day where they will take charge of helping to clean dishes and lavatory.

Where: The camp will take place in Kachien village located just outside Oyugis town in Homa bay county in the western Kenya. We will stay in a small beautiful and cozy farm with plenty of music, jamming, evening bonfire and loads of fun! The weather will be warm most days.

Location: Kachien village is less than two hours from Kisumu airport and seven hours with a bus from Nairobi city. With beautiful scenery and near Lake Victoria (Africa's largest lake) it is a scenic and inspirational environment for music and creativity. We will pick you up on the 19th at the Easy coach bus station/office in Oyugis town at around 4:45 - 5:00 pm.

When: The camp is scheduled from Saturday 18th of July until Friday 31th of July 2026.(including arrivals and departure).

TARGET: Individual 18 years and above

Skills level: Musicians Intermediate, advanced and professionals from any country.

PARTICIPATION FEE:

Basic Rate : 20,000 KSH (Participants living in Africa)

Middle Rate: 280 Euros (International Participants not living in Africa)

Note: The participant fee caters for all expenses including the cost of workshops, professional mentoring, accommodation, food and transportation for the duration of the camp and the tour. The fee does not include the VISA fee and travel to Kenya. Application for a Kenya visa must be done early in advance to avoid last minute cancellation. Please check the requirements needed in the Kenya government visa application portal.

Once your application is approved you will be sent notification and details of a bank account to pay your participant fee.

PRACTICAL DETAILS:

Accommodation and Logistics: Female/male tents of 2-3 sleeping spaces per tent cabin and lodging during the concert tour. You will need to bring your own sleeping equipment (mats, pillow, sheets, blankets or sleeping bags and towels). If you have challenges with this, please let us know so we can try to assist you.

We expect participants to bring their own instruments. If you have challenges with this please contact us, and we will see if we can assist you in any way. There will be a safe space to lock the instruments.
